January 2012 PnL

I don't remember if I took a screenshot of my cashier balance back in December 2011. I couldn't find it.

If you need an amount to tell how I played--I started with $100 in the middle of December 2011. From that amount, I made +236.28% GAIN since.

Variance, and how it affects your mental game

My game went into variance these last few days. I was making players happy in the tables as I made investments in my meta-game. But really, I was calling too much hoping to get lucky on the river.

I was also getting set over set, and villain getting lucky on the river, but this is part of the game. I wasn't playing well and paid tuition for it. Hopefully, I've got everything straightened out by now.

The kids are going back to school next week. That means more quiet time for me to work on my copywriting business and my poker business. It's also a good time for me to get back to working out in the gym again.

I alternate a session of writing, with a session of playing poker. I get in at least three sessions of both during the day. To keep myself from getting cabin sickness, I go out and get exercise once a day, then do a session of yoga after dinner.

I don't think I can handle playing poker all day, everyday. That was what happened last year when I decided to stop playing. I got sick of playing.

How I Keep Myself From Getting Bored With Poker

I am tired of writing. Like, I don't ever want to write copy again for the rest of my life. But then again, I get bored with playing poker and I start writing to while the time away. One thing leads to another and I enjoy writing again.

I run an online marketing agency. It's what keeps me sane when I am not playing poker. I have three clients waiting for a proposal. At the moment, I'd rather do nothing and not have to think about copywriting for a while.

The kids are going back to school next week. That means I can go back to the gym and start working out again in the mornings. I stopped going about two months ago when the school year ended. I miss going to the gym. I miss time alone for my self.

It's a beautiful day outside--almost cloudless. Either I go for a walk, do yoga or take a nap. I have just finished my third session for the day. I'll probably make lunch first, then take a nap. If I can't sleep, then I will do yoga.

What is the best way to play open ender in a raised pot?

straight draw poker
Can any body give advice on the best way to play flopped open ended straight draws against 1 or more villians? Finding a serious leak at 5NL by not playing these draws aggressively enough because im scared of getting re-poped by degens. Any help?

Source - Two Plus Two Poker Forums - View Single Post - Best way to play Open ender in a raised pot

Small hand, small pot. Big hand, big pot.

It all depends on who else is there on the flop. How much history do you have with this player? What image do you have with these players? How does villain react to cbet? check-raise? turn donk? all-in?

If you are not sure and do not have enough insight on how villain plays, simply check and see how villain reacts.

Made My Bankroll - Moving Up To 5NL

Image shows win-rate for last 10,000 hands. I played 24-tables at 5NL with 200-big blind stacks. I had a good session that I will now be able to play 5NL with 250bb on my next session.

Taking Shots at 5NL

The chart above shows win-rate for the last 10,000 hands. The image below shows win-rate for all hands.

I started taking shots at 5NL this afternoon. I had to lower my buy in to 200 big blinds instead of my usual 250bbs. The logic behind this decision is that I am after the points I'll be earning for that particular session.

After an hour of play, I found myself on tilt and had lost half a buy-in. I decided to take a break for an hour. When I got back, I adjusted my buy in back to 250bb and played exclusively at 2NL.

Running hot?

I have just finished a morning session and was surprised to find this. I'm having breakfast with the kids now.

Which strategy works best?

One week after pokerstars changed their rake system, I decided to test how this will affect how I play. So far, I have noticed that I am making a 3% gain in VPP per day.

If this keeps up, I am going to earn that VIP cash bonus, allowing me to play marginal hands every now and then. What this means is that how I play will work with the new rake setup at pokerstars. This is good, don't you agree?

I also noticed that there were more short stack players playing microstakes full ring. I do not know if this has anything to do with the new rake. I have been running into "winning short stack" strategy type content on the web lately.

Do they work? Of course they do. Every method works. The deciding factor is how you play it.

Being consistent with each blog update that I make, here is my win-rate chart, all hands.

Important consideration when moving up stake levels

pokerstars traffic

I haven't seen this much traffic in pokerstars since black friday. Where did they come from? Does this have something to do with the Nanonoko world record attempt? What does this mean for us grinders looking forward?

I was wrong last night. I still won't be able to play 5NL tables until my bankroll reaches $300. I play with 250 big blind stacks per table. Even with 2NL tables mixed in, my bankroll comes up short playing 24 tables.

So, 5NL, I will see you in a few weeks!

How many days does it take to double your bankroll at 2NL?

23 days.

I got back to playing poker again beginning December 16, 2011 with $100. When I checked my bankroll just now, I found out that I have already doubled that amount.

It is 11.12pm. I just finished my last session for the day. Starting tomorrow, I am going to include 5NL tables in my daily session.

Since pokerstars introduced the new rake system, I have been tightening up as I play 24-tables. I wanted to see how other players will adjust and adapt their game with the new system. At the same time, I want to verify for myself how soon I can get the VIP cash bonus given the present circumstance.

Stop doing this one thing and watch your win-rate go up

win rate poker

The last few days has been one bumpy ride. I paid tuition on the tables to learn (again) an important lesson in low variance winning poker--stop using the CALL button.

How I play vs short stacks

short stack poker

Being too lazy to figure out how to set the stat "Stacks in bb" in pokertracker3, I decided to use holdemmanager for this morning's session. HM has this stat by default. In PT3, I have to download that file then tweak that to my liking.

PokerTracker3 Full Version License

I finally got my PokerTracker3 Full version license today.

I finished the required 250 VPPs sometime last week, but it took a few days to get the license--everyone must have been on christmas break. Like other poker apps, the license is good for two computers. Anything more than that and the license will be taken from an older computer.

It did not take too long for me to make the 250 VPPs. I play 22 tables on pokerstars. With tableninja and autohotkey combo, multi-tabling comes easy. I can go for 24 tables, but I start to lose my focus and my win-rate starts to suffer.
