pokerstars city

As of this writing, Poker Stars is the most popular poker venue not only in the world, but in the history of poker. Online or brick-and-mortar, it doesn't matter.

FBI Shuts Down Online Poker, Ticking Off Millions of Poker Players and One Mommyblogger

Something is different around here. The office chair, which once was occupied in the evenings by the resident poker player, sits empty most nights. The double screens of our home PC, which once were filled with eight poker tables at a time, are black and empty. I used to jokingly describe myself as a poker widow. If that was true, it looks like my poker husband has come back from the dead.

Friday

I have been on a good run these last few sessions that I've played. Most of the big pots that I won were against villain who can't put down top pair. The sample is too small to make a conclusion right now. The calling stations are still there. Now and then, there's a maniac on my right. A few regs are still there.

The micro stakes sure feels different after black friday. I don't see as many full stack players on the tables. Does this mean there's more fish? I am not sure I can say that. Not that the situation is better or worse, only different. The average stack most of the time, is lower than 200bb.

You know things are serious when people are willing to give up their country before they'll give up their game.

With Americans looking at a horizon devoid of online poker some are considering taking matters into their own hands and finding a home more hospitable to their chosen profession. Here are our picks for realistic locations where players can legally enjoy online poker.

wednesday

I haven't played any poker since black friday. Since that fateful morning, all I did was learn ruby programming. And now I am sick and tired of it.

I can't play because I withdrew my money from pokerstars. It usually takes three days for the funds to clear. Looking at the number of players at the tables after black friday, I think pokerstars is processing a LOT of withdrawals.

The question for me now is this--do I still want to play in pokerstars? Or should I take advantage of the 200% deposit bonus with ipoker?

I am inclined to take the big bonus, either with chilipoker or titan poker. The pokerstars issue might take some time to unravel. If found guilty, I don't know how things will pick up from there.

Considering that the issue will indeed take months, then I am inclined to play again with pokerstars. They have the most number of players still. More players means more fish. It is easier to multi table on ps using tableninja and HM. Without these two, I can still play 12 tables per session, but it wouldn't be as 'ergonomic.'

And why, you might ask, am I learning about ruby?

Two words--poker bots.

Playing poker as a business, having an army of poker bots is the next step. I am not making one to sell them. I am making them for myself (and a few others). But it's going to take some time. It's not like buying a poker bot and running it out of the box. There is going to be a lot of thinking and trial & error that has to go into this.

Soon as it is up and running, I'll let you know how it is doing.

U.S. Crack Down on Online Poker

On Friday, it was reported that the government began a crackdown on major online poker sites Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars and Absolute Poker, charging operators with fraud and money laundering and seizing their websites, effectively ending real money play in the U.S. Below is a letter drafted by an online poker player to the U.S. Government.

First off, I want to clear up a widespread misconception. Although the people named in the indictment are being charged with violating the UIGEA they’re also being charged with bank fraud and money laundering. Those last two are serious enough to take down Stars and Tilt if they prove to be true. People like the PPA are making flawed statements like this:

NASCAR racing is the gold standard in America for fan attendance, with races drawing upwards of 150,000 spectators.

How popular is online poker? On a given Wednesday afternoon, the number of players logged on to PokerStars exceeds 300,000. Even as the economy has fallen, interest in online poker has risen. And it’s accomplished despite online poker remaining in a legal netherworld in the United States. That’s like Lebron James averaging a triple-double for the season while playing with a broken leg.

Online poker is bigger than it’s ever been, yet it’s present audience is probably smaller than it will ever be.

I don't know what happened, but my database seems to have updated itself. The chart is not showing the actual profit/loss situation for the year, but this is close. There's still 40k hands missing.

64 Things Every Geek Should Know

If you consider yourself a geek, or aspire to the honor of geekhood, here’s an essential checklist of must-have geek skills.

The term ‘geek’, once used to label a circus freak, has morphed in meaning over the years. What was once an unusual profession transferred into a word indicating social awkwardness. As time has gone on, the word has yet again morphed to indicate a new type of individual: someone who is obsessive over one (or more) particular subjects, whether it be science, photography, electronics, computers, media, or any other field. A geek is one who isn’t satisfied knowing only the surface facts, but instead has a visceral desire to learn everything possible about a particular subject.

tuesday

Playing around with fpdb after dinner, I got a glimpse of how my stats looked like after playing a few hands on pokerstars--

It is still a work in progress. I wouldn't play higher stakes on this atm. The HUD, I still don,t see on my tables. It's supposed to come up together with auto import. It doesn't. I opened 8 tables this time, and about 10 hands into the session, the poker client stopped responding.

I am working on this because I intend to have linux running on my pc exclusively in the near future. On times when the "mow open" sign is not on the tables, I am on linux.

I have a number of chores to do tomorrow. I am not sure if I can play during the day.

As for the missing hands issue with HM, I decided to remove, then reinstall HM and pg on vista, then import hands only for the month of march. I made 60% profit in that month alone, but when I run the chart on HM, it shows that I lost money. And to think that the data I imported were the ones I requested from pokerstars.

I am going to let that go now. This issue has taken so much of my time. If the charts are inconsistent, then so be it. At least the HUDs are working.

Work with what you got.

ubuntu poker

Losing a big pot playing at 10NL, I decided to quit playing and work on the ubuntu poker interface (is that the correct term?).

I got fpdb pointing to the hamd history folder inside wine. I then played a few tables to see if auto-import will work--and it did! The CLI was open and I saw in the terminal that auto-import worked. What I did not see was my HUD. It didn't show up. Maybe I have to configure something first.

One other thing I wanted to make a note of is this--
- table management
- 8 tables was ok; 12 = crash

Everything was working well playing with 8 tables. I had some issues with table management as I had some big hands that went to showdown and found it difficult to find my way back to that table once table focus has shifted.

Table management can be as simple as using alt+tab. I am using that. What I need is something that allows me to cycle tables forward and back like it does in tableninja. I googled that early this morning. There seems to be an app for that somewhere. I saw a site that mentioned something that had something to do with "quake."

After a while, I decided to see if things will work with 12 tables running--it didn't. A short while after I had 12 tables opened, pokerstars stopped responding and I had to xkill that.

I think there is a log somewhere here in ubuntu that will tell me what went wrong where. I will go take a look...

Homework for me--
- find that log (if there is one)
- get fpdb HUD to work
- window management app (like table manager)
- learn more about fpdb
- turn on comment feature to get feedback from readers done!

march PnL

For the month of march 2011, profit was +68.62%.

To get profit, I used the march ending balance, deducted two deposits made, then divided the sum with beginning balance for feb, deducted one from the result, then multiplied by 100.

I couldn't find (too lazy) the screenshot for beginning balance for march. I know I posted it to this blog weeks ago. It's probably easier to look inside picassa. I will do that later. Soon as I get that, I will update computations so we can arrive at my year-to-date percentage number.

To establish a baseline for pnl computations for april, here is my beginning balance--
