failed to connect to database

Holdem manager failed to connect to database this afternoon when I was about to play. I had to do troubleshooting to make it work--and it didn't. And it's frustrating. First I did the simple stop/start server. That didn't work. I then tried everything listed in that webpage, to no avail.

10 cool things you can do with Linux and not with windows

Things you can do with Linux and not with windows

Some people install windows on their netbook (or buy one with windows). I think this is not very smart because the only things you could ever really need windows for (games and photoshop) are not likely to run very well on these things.

An Open Source Legal Breakthrough

"Open source advocate Bruce Perens writes in Datamation about a major court victory for open source: 'An appeals court has erased most of the doubt around Open Source licensing, permanently, in a decision that was extremely favorable toward projects like GNU, Creative Commons, Wikipedia, and Linux.'

After days trying to figure out how to make a good screencast using ubuntu, I finally got it--use ffmpeg!

To capture full screen, the cli (command line input) is-- ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i pulse -f x11grab -r 30 -s 1440x898 -i :0.0+0,1 -acodec pcm_s16le -vcodec libx264 -vpre lossless_ultrafast -threads 0 output.mkv

To find out specs for screen capture, the cli is: “xwinifo”

ffmpeg comes in the default ubuntu package, or you can find it in your synaptic package manager.

Next step: learn how to use cinelerra.

What I Learned using Linux over the last 10 years

bulls are back

After a good nap, I found myself playing in 2NL. I was getting big hands with villain willing to go all in on almost everyone of them. Variance.

I can write more but my fingers are not able to catch up typing with my train of thought--dvorak keyboard. I will leave things as such for now, write more after I have adapted to this layout.

Time for yoga.

4.41 am

I was about to make a post when I saw this--

...I have a thousand posts on this blog to-date.

I woke up at two am. My son has asthma. I got up to give him his meds and couldn't get back to sleep. So I write.

While lying in bed, trading forex got into my head. People who make money playing poker--I see videos of them on youtube and read about them on the internet. I hardly find anything about forex traders that make money (I used to trade forex).

I find stuff made by "trading experts" but you won't find anything like the series, "2 months 2 million."

On a different note, my keyboard is now on dvorak layout. I am spending time getting used to this layout. I am typing very slow at the moment. In time, I will get used to this and get bark to writing easy again.

YouTube - Stephen Fry - Free Software

my world

Again, I wait. Remember that in-law who needed tech support I mentioned yesterday? He didn't show up. I waited an hour, no show. He's online now. I sent him IM that if he's ready, let me know. No reply. We'll see what happens. In the meantime, I stumble. I research. I learn stuff.

I intend to play today, get back on the horse. I missed playing yesterday and wanted to play at some point in the day, but did not have a long stretch of time. I am free now and looking forward to playing. I'll give this guy until 10am. No show, then that's it for him. He'll have to find someone else to help him.

Blackjack Long/Short Term

"...There is a lot of talk about the long term and short term in Blackjack. Basically the only difference is that the more you play, the more likely your actual play will match theoretical advantage. The fewer hands you play, the more random your results. Which is to say that short-term results have no meaning. You cannot project advantage or long-term results from short-term results."

Adblock Plus :: Add-ons for Firefox

This works--try it!

I'm not sure I can play poker today, at least not during the day. I have a full plate. At 9am, I'll be skyping with my in-laws to provide tech support with their pc. I'm not really sure what problems they have with their pc. It's more people support than tech support. Old folks who are new into this technology and are still in that anxious-mode where they are afraid they might break something.

ubuntu linux: download and convert youtube to audio file

FREE and open source poker tracking software

I am one step closer to moving my poker business over to ubuntu linux. Here's an open source poker tracking software that works in linux--

FREE video editing software for linux

I haven't downloaded and tested this software yet, but this looks far better than the camtasia I am using over at windows. What's great is that cinerella is just one of the many free video editing software that I can use on ubuntu linux.

Here's the link to that free toy store. Check out one that works for you--

If it wasn't for the proprietary poker software, I'd remove windows vista off my pc without second thoughts. Maybe I can find a work-around here somewhere, sometime later.

Here is the video editing software I am seriously considering to install on my pc. It's called kdenlive

ubuntu linux: mp3 to ogg format

Here's why I love ubuntu linux

FREE software!

Three sessions played for today. Four actually, but the third one, I stopped halfway through. I felt tired and took a nap. Chart showing higher highs with higher lows. This could be the start of another bull run.

I am still playing at 2NL. I want to see a bullish continuation pattern above support (red line on chart) before moving up 5NL.

My kids and I were watching glee on tv when it was interrupted with news from the 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan. One of my kids asked me why these things happen (there was recently a big earthquake down in christchurch)?

The answer that popped in my head was--shit happens to remind us of what is important to us.

dvorak keyboard

After installing ubuntu linux on my pc, my next project is to remap my brain and keyboard to the dvorak layout. It is easier than anticipated. There are plenty of resources on the internet to help me with the process. I already know how to touch type. So all I need to do now is remap everything.

Here is a great dvorak keyboard training website-- It's free and easy to learn. The lessons are broken down into easy steps where I learn by level. I can opt to switch cold turkey, but others in the house are using the keyboard. I'll make the switch after I get keyboard stickers and finished all the level tutorials in that site.

Switching cold turkey, I'll make changes in ubuntu linux first, then switch over windows vista. Running the tutorials three times a day, I might finish the switch within a month's time.

The Husband Store

A brand new department store has just opened in London. It sells husbands.

Today, in math class, I had the urge to fart. I had the bright idea that if I dropped my textbook and farted at the same time, nobody would hear it. I dropped my textbook, everyone looked at me, then I farted. Loudly. FML

This is a practical selection of the commands we use most often. Press to see the listing of all available command (on your PATH). On my small home system, it says there are 2595 executables on my PATH. Many of these "commands" can be accessed from your favourite GUI front-end (probably KDE or Gnome) by clicking on the right menu or button. They can all be run from the command line. Programs that require GUI have to be run from a terminal opened under a GUI.

Wow, talk about online beasts. Andrew Li has already earned more than 1 million VPPs on PokerStars, and he did it all before the end of February. That makes him the first player to reach Supernova Elite in 2011, and gives him the record for fastest time ever on the road to SNE status.

Ubuntu 10.10

This post was written inside an ubuntu10.10 OS.

I lost two buy-ins early in my morning session yesterday. Pointing downstream, I found myself looking into the possibility of installing ubuntu dual boot. I posted my situation in the forums and within fifteen minutes, I had a reply.
