Why not feature winning grinders?

If I had a poker site, here's how I am going to get players--GRINDERS

Most of the poker sites will feature the best, brightest, richest and most attractive players from all over the world. It's nice and good to have someone to look up to like that, but that's the 1%.

I can't relate to them, can you?

The 99 percent are people like you and me--average Joe's and Jane's grinding in front of their computers every day. To these people, everyone can relate to. If we see that average people like us can make a good living playing poker, we will be motivated to grind it out ourselves.

Poker Tracker 3 "Get It Free" Promo

I must have finished the 250 VPP required for the PT3 "Get it free" promo early this morning. I sent a request thru their website just now.

As you can see from their website, the full version license for poker tracker 3 is $89.99. Poker tracker is going to give me the full version license soon as I make 250 VPPs playing in pokerstars.

To those of you with an accounting background reading this, can I consider this as part of my revenue, even though I did not pay for it in cash?

I miss playing rush poker, don't you?

The most I had open was four tables. No wonder they called it rush poker. You get a rush of excitement while playing in those tables.

Ten days of play, up 71%

I decided to come back and play online poker with pokerstars about ten days ago, on December 16, 2011. I funded my account with $100 the following day, if I remember correctly.

I never graduated from university. I was there for five years, simply because I was having a grand time, but got tired of it and never bothered to go after getting a diploma.

People say I wasted both my time and my parent's money. I did not. I learned a lot of skills on how to deal with people. To this day, I am still using them in all my online business.

Anyway, my line of work after finishing university was sales and marketing. I sold encyclopedias door to door, B2B for magazine subscriptions, cars, real estate, pharmaceuticals. There are three essentials that I learned from sales and that I find applicable in playing poker are the following:
  • Numbers game
  • Qualify prospects
  • Always be closing

How I get back money that I lost on tilt

win-rate chart

Constant learning

I was able to get back tuition paid on tilt yesterday. When I say tuition, what I mean is that I lost money, but learned something in return. It could be information on how villain plays, or the circumstance showed me a lesson on better poker.

You probably want to ask how I got back tuition paid.

Low variance poker. If I don't have the strong hands, I fold. The method is called TAG, or Tight Aggressive. I pick my spots, I am patient. Small hand, small pot, big hand, big pot is the TAG's mantra.

Even on a Christmas day, there was a lot of players on pokerstars, more than 200,000 players when I first signed in this morning. I did not get to play as many hands as before. I must have played half of my usual number of hands, but it was profitable just the same.

This is me, making everyone on the table happy

On tilt

If you have been following this blog, you can tell when I have just messed up a session--no charts.

I fucked up two hands and lost two buy ins. The first was me playing back on villain who keeps donking me. I had two pairs, but the deck was connected. I did not think things through and when villain shoved all in, I just called. She had straight nuts.

Immediately after that, same thing, two pairs versus straight. I called all in. Second buy in lost.

Sigh. No more poker until tomorrow.

Free Poker Tracker 3

I am working towards earning my free poker tracker 3 (full version). I need to make 250 points playing poker. At the moment, I have 51% earned. I am playing with the 60-day demo version. It's possible that I can finish this before that demo period is over, don't you think?

Two Pairs on Turn, Now What?

Hand Analysis

Not a lot of hand history with villain who has position (CO) over hero. Villain has been limping in with almost half the hands dealt.

How to play TPTK

Hand analysis

+5k hands played so far, in the black playing at 2NL. I haven't gotten around to getting my previous hand history from pokerstars. Those stats could be passe by now, since three months has passed. I'm going to play with whatever hand history I get from here on.

I was gone three months and I see some of the regulars I was playing back then are still playing at 2NL. One player in particular, we'll call "bruxo" as that is part of his/her username.

Poker Tracker 3 - Configuring HUD

Player stats

I have my PT3 HUD up and running when I play, but there's a lot of tweaking that I still have to do. At the moment, I have the basic stats that I need while playing.

What's next for me is to set up color ranges, such that when a certain stat for a player is at a given level, it shows red, and a different level shows blue. This helps me make quick decisions based on the colors that I see and not have to rely on the actual number. Little things like this help when multi-tabling.

In a future blog, I will share with you which stats I have on my HUD, why I use them and the parameters that I use to determine color change.

Stay tuned.

How to improve your win-rate with a simple tweak

I am making changes to my game, yet again. The way I was playing is OK and am making good at it. Take a look at my previous posts from three months ago. The chart image will show you how I was doing.

Here is how I am doing so far, which reminded me that I am going to make changes.

Improve your game without trying

I started playing today. One table at first to test if everything was OK. An hour later, I ante'd up and played 16-tables. I was thinking too much playing anything less than that.

Newbie learning

I mentioned in a previous post that I was going to give poker tracker3 a try. Back when I was getting started, PT3 was my first choice. I was able to install and run PT3 back then.

One time, I ran defraggler on my system and did not turn off the database server. That messed up PT3 and it took days to get support. That's when I gave holdem manager a try.

It has been a sideways weekend--making people happy and I had to go down one stake level from 10NL. Green line is back up above recent major resistance. I have two choices here. Take shots again at 10NL and risk having a negative PnL for September, or keep playing at 2NL 5NL and have a positive PnL.

If you were in my position, what would you do?

On a different note...

I have been listening to the audiobook, The Four Hour Work Week and got an idea. I have been documenting this poker business since day one. The new business venture is going to be like this--
- write 'play poker as a home-based business' ebook
- sell that ebook for a cause, which is...
- to use the money to stake pinoy poker players

I'm not sure how this venture is going to turn out. I am in the process of getting another business off the ground at the moment(something to do with web development). Soon as I get to cruise altitude, I'll see if I can get this one up and running.

Not much happening lately. I am curious as to what will happen to the red line so I am going to start posting my charts with her in it.

I have been going to the doctor's clinic to have the surgical dressing on my back changed. I go almost every day, except on weekends when they are closed. It's free anyway and I enjoy getting more sun. This morning, the doctor wrote a referral for me to have the cyst surgically removed. He said he'll fax that to the hospital and that I should expect to get a call from them sometime soon.

It's funny that I can tell who's tech-savvy or not just by the way they type on their keyboard. That doctor doesn't spend a lot of time on the internet. His typing speed is hunt and peck style. He will hunt for the letters first, then peck on them with his index fingers. My kids type faster than this guy.

Tomorrow, I am going there again. It's a good thing their nurses are such eye candies. And the receptionists too.

EV Explained

I was playing with my charts on HM, and noticed that my all-in EV somehow deviated down and away from my winnings line. Take a look--

Curious as to what this meant, I googled it and found this FAQ on holdemmanager: EV Explained.

It says that, EV is a mathematical formula based on when a hand goes all-in before the river.

I only scanned through the page, and from what I gathered, when that red line started to deviate away from the green line, it meant that:

* I made my nuts on the flop
* went all-in either on the flop or turn
* have been winning more of, and from the showdown hands than I did before.

Here's where I get confused.

There was this time last week where I went through a dry spell. I got sucked out on, and I hardly got the nuts. Why did that red line not climb up any closer to the green line? At some point, the red line decided to go sideways while the green line did what it was supposed to. What made that red line go sideways and not keep up with the green line?

I am going to look that up when I have the time. Or maybe not. As long as the green line is up, I am not complaining about what that red line is going to do next.

the 2p2 uNL bloglist

I completely forgot about this. I vaguely remember requesting to have this blog added on that list more than a year ago.

nice ;p

It's 2pm. One of my kids are having friends over. I am sleepy after a heavy lunch. I was thinking of doing a session, but after a few hands, my head wasn't in the game. I'll take a nap with all the noise in the other room. Maybe they'll opt to play in the yard.

This finally feels like variance is starting to work in my favor again. Since coming home from the hospital the other day, all I do is play poker, rest, do easy things, then play poker again. The wound in my back is not as bothersome as it was before. Tomorrow, I head back to the clinic and have that dressing changed. At the end of the month, I go see that surgeon again to have that cyst removed.

i was in the hospital

The chart above shows hands played this month to-date. I am not seeing a lot of homeruns lately. Times like these, I am putting in money in the pot for my meta-game. At least I am above breaking even.

I wasn't able to play yesterday. I went to visit my doctor about a boil in my back that was bothering me. It started out like a pimple, but now it was almost the size of my palm. When the doctor saw the 'boil' she adamantly insisted that I take it to the hospital and have a surgeon take care of the abscess--TODAY. I asked her if it was something I should worried about. Yes, she said. What complicates things, she mentioned was that it was sitting right in the middle of my back, where my spine was. She then called the hospital, spoke to a surgeon and told them I was coming.

The last time I was in the hospital was back in 1982 in manila. I had typhoid fever. There was a lot of anxiety in me. It was a bump that had been on my back for at least three months. It got swollen and painful these last few days. I was scaring myself shitless worrying if it was a tumor.

When the surgeon saw that thing, I immediately asked--is it cancer, or can lead to cancer. His answer--NO.

He explained that it was a sebaceous cyst that got infected. He then gave me two choices. Do I want it removed under local anesthesia (with a lot of pain), or go into surgery where they put me to sleep. I chose that they put me to sleep. I then explained that I was not yet permanent resident. Would it cost me anything? He said it might, but wasn't sure. I kept to my decision. So they brought me to that ward where all the patients scheduled for surgery.

While lying in bed, I kept thinking to myself that we might not be able to afford it if I went into surgery. When the doctor came back, he explained that he wasn't sure about my immigration status, but it might cost $1000 to $2000. I told him I want it removed under local anesthetic.

And it hurt a lot.

It was really painful. The abscess was as big as my palm. You can just imagine how much pus was in there. It hurt when I touched it lightly. This time, the doctor was making injections around the area to anesthetize it, making it numb for the procedure.

I was sent home later that night. I was prescribed with some antibiotics and told to come back in two weeks so a surgeon can remove the cyst, otherwise, the infection will come back, and god knows what. The clinic can change the dressing on the wound every three days until I get that cyst removed.

The upside to all this experience was that we never paid a single dollar. I was in that surgical ward for three hours. They were giving me all these medications, IV solutions to keep me hydrated, and antibiotics preparing me for the surgery. I was thinking all that time that all this was going to cost at least $100.

There were three filipino nurses there that kept me company. Us pinoys love to mingle with other pinoys when we see one here in nz. After the doctor took care of the abscess, one of the pinoy nurses told me that, if I had this procedure done in manila, a neurosurgeon would have handled the procedure. That would easily have cost Php250,000.

We didn't pay a single dollar.*

I love it here!

As an aside, I arrived at the hospital at 11am. I got out at 7pm. I did not mind waiting, in fact, I enjoyed it. Everywhere I looked I'd find HOT women--doctors, nurses, patients and their visitors. I felt like I was taking part in a live episode of Grey's Anatomy ;p

* you'd probably feel the same way I did if you grew up in a third world country.

How To Make a Woman Happy

How To Make a Woman Happy |

One thing I noticed is that short stack time is from 2pm to 6pm (GMT+12). There are more short stackers playing on pokerstars uNL than any other time of the day. The best time for me to play is in the morning, or late at night. Whenever I play during short stack time, my attention is focused more on table selection (moving away from short stackers) than making good plays.

I was going through a lot of personal issues these past few days. This shows in the momentary sideways movement of the chart where I was playing poorly. The issue has something to do with my health and immigration, and are connected. As long as I am aware of how I respond to the situation, everything is all right. If I fall into my "victimization" mode, I make everyone in the tables happy.

tao te ching - on confidence and fear

Winning can be just as bad as losing.
Confidence can mess you up
just as much as fear.

What does
"winning can be just as bad as losing" mean?

If you're down,
you might be able to get up.
But if you're up,
you can get knocked down real fast.
Don't worry about the score,
just do what you have to do.

What does
"confidence can mess you up
just as much as fear" mean?

Fear can keep you
from getting the job done,
but confidence
can get you in over your head.
Walk tall, but don't get cocky.

Know your limits,
and nothing can ever hold you back.
Deal with what you can.
The rest will follow.

Translation by Ron Hogan
Programming by Simon Hudson

Chart shows hands played for the last 10k hands. I am back taking shots at 10NL. A few of the regs I played at 2NL are also there. Some are playing as consistently as they do on other levels, a few are tighter than usual.

While washing the dishes this morning, the idea came up on getting another stake. I checked into the 2p2 forums for cash games staking and sent an application to one that appealed the most. I'm not sure how this one is going to go.

I gave up on staking a few months back. They start me up one stake level higher, but on a limited-risk bankroll. The bankroll the staker provides is almost same amount of bankroll that I have at that moment. What happens then is that I play the same amount of hands over time, but get half the profits playing the same bankroll.

The upside to staking is the promise of getting more funds if my game is profitable. It gets easier to go up stake levels with someone else's money. There is also the opportunity of learning from other players. So it's 50/50 then about getting staked--not very good, but not such a bad idea after all.

Maybe I am just bored with playing alone, sitting in front of the computer all day. For now, I am going to keep my options open--see what happens.

Last 10,000 hands. Not much happening.

If you play at pokerstars, you might have noticed the new feature--"easy seat."

This allows you to set criterias for table selection, like a range for stake levels you want to play, set the maximum number of tables that you are playing for the session, then sit back and start clicking.

Soon as you close one table that you don't like for one reason or another, you have a new one up and running in the background (not taking focus away from active table), all within 3 seconds. This is one feature that deserves recognition from us grinders.

Now the autohotkey script I made to open tables is obsolete. Easy seat makes it easy for me to get replacement tables. What I like about it is that it works seamlessly in the background. New tables are opened based on the criteria that I set and they do not take focus from the ones I am playing.

With the ahk script I was using (daJoinT.ahk), the script will first bring focus on the lobby, then click on join waitlist. It does so every 10 seconds or so. Playing 20 tables where the lobby comes up every ten seconds can get quite confusing and takes getting used to.

When I first tried out 'easy seat' I had to check the lobby now and then wondering if I am on the waitlist on any of the tables. You practically see an empty waitlist in the lobby anymore. They are automatically filled in by this new feature.

Sweet, isn't it?

The only issue I noticed with it was that, after an hour or so of playing, the easy seat stops by itself and I had to manually turn on the start button from the lobby. I am not sure what is affecting that script's loop function. It could be something that triggers it during gameplay with my own script--or something else. I have already emailed about it.

I AM NANONOKO - A Short Film by PokerStars Team Online (HD) - YouTube

I AM NANONOKO - A Short Film by PokerStars Team Online (HD) - YouTube

another tough weekend. First pokerstars had a software update, tableninja and holdemmanager bonked out because of that update. It was only an hour ago that HM released 1.12.0 allowing me to play with HUDs on all tables.

Tableninja, no updates as of this writing so I had to make do with autohotkey workarounds--which turned out good for me. I have been trying to figure out how to make "ControlClick" to work on my scripts. I finally figured it out and have been using it since yesterday.

Saturday, September 3, 2011

memo to self

DO NOT click on OK for pokerstars to do a software update--do so only after tableninja has updated theirs.

I just spent the whole day finding a workaround/patch using autohotkey just so I can multi-table efficiently. I also noticed that holdemmanager did not have a HUD on 1/4 of my tables.

Tableninja used to be fast with their updates. Seeing a ps update, I knew then that if I fired up tn, it's going to ask for an update too. Lately, it takes from three days to a week for them to get things right.

Poker Tracker was first, but Holdem Manager leads the market today(imo). Maybe someone can write a better software than tableninja one of these days. In the meantime, I'm going to have to make do with what I got.

No, it wasn't a good day for me today.

TableNinja did not immediately send updates after Pokerstars updated their client. I am trying out this ahk script and see it works out.

Two hours later...

StarsCash.ahk, some functions are working, some aren't, specially the potbet functions. Looking for solutions on the 2p2 forums, I found that this is a common problem and did not find a distinct solution addressed by the developer.

As a workaround, I tried using starscash with tableninja by disabling functions from each of them--running these together only gave me more headaches to deal with.

Either I will look under the hood with starscash.ahk and get the parts that I can use, or wait for the tableninja update. Or both. I guess I am not going to play poker today.

This is why I am learning how to code. Using both open source software and commercial software, support doesn't happen as fast as I want it to. At least with open source software (like starscash.ahk), I can look under the hood and change things to make things work for me. With commercial software, I have no choice but to wait for updates, or a reply from tech support.

Starscash.ahk has a lot of functions that I want to learn--like being able to join waitlists on consecutive tables even if tables take away focus from the lobby. I am going to see if I can get rid of the GUI, copy parts of the code over to my ahk script. This is going to take some time.

Analysis on Courtney Gee's Poker Update

This came up in my radar this morning and wanted to write something about this before I start my day off-- Downswings Make Poker Not Fun – Courtney Gee Poker Update

First, take a look at this--
I didn’t get the chance to post last week because I was quite busy, so today I will report on two weeks of poker. You will soon see that things didn’t change much, though, and that I kept losing money! Here are the unfortunate numbers:

August 15th to 21th:
# MTTs: 168
Hours: 26.5
Net result: -$2,125.99

August 22nd to 28th:
# MTTs: 100
Hours: 21
Net result: -$2,335.87

That brings my total MTT losses since August 6th to $9,098. Yikes.
That if it is possible to lose this much money in less than a month, then the opposite side of the stick tells me that, (with a good method) anyone can make that much in profit as well. If you lived in Manila, US$2,000 will go a long way in 30 days.

My next question then is, how much is Courtney's bankroll? Looking at the dollars that she gave away in those weeks, she probably has a bankroll of about $100,000. Most unlikely, the minimum backroll she is working with would be about $20,000. Unlikely because, if you are losing 10% of your bankroll in a week means you are not going to last long in this business.

Second thing I noticed is this--
I can’t really disagree with the latter statement. We are obviously much less likely to endure downswings that big when we are playing well. The problem is that playing well all the time is extremely difficult. We are human and bad days are going to happen once in a while.
That part where Courtney says, "playing well all the time is extremely difficult" I disagree with. It is easy to play well. It's simple. Define how a good poker player would play, then behave that way in every way. Where she is failing at is that she has expectations. She wants to see a = b. That playing well equals making money. It's not that easy. Why? Variance. No matter how well you play, the fish will get the nuts on the river now and then.

After playing hundreds of thousands of hands, I know that variance works both ways. If fish gets the nuts on the river every now and then, I too, will have that. What is importnat is that I keep my expenses small and the profits will take care of itself in the long term.

Here is strike three--
In somewhat of an example, this past Friday I was running really badly when calling people down. People’s lines just kept making no sense so I just kept calling, and they somehow had it every single time. This caused me to unfortunately adjust my calling ranges so that in future hands with similar situations, I didn't call when I should have.
I suspect she's going to showdown with TPTK in a big pot. Two pairs and three of a kinds are also considered marginal hands if villain wants to make a big pot. Winning players know that you never play marginal hands. When you make a set or better, you value bet all the way. You never call down a set even if you suspect villain having a bigger hand over you. When you showdown a big hand aggressively, next time the other players see this happen, they will suspect you have a big hand. That is investing in your meta-game.

I am assuming that Courtney is putting a lot of pressure on herself. Making a living as a professional athlete (poker player) and putting yourself out for public scrutiny is not a good combination. Courtney is probably trying too hard to show good results to everyone, that she finds herself playing marginal hands a lot of times hoping to make a big win.

If I were in her spot, I'd rather focus on my stats. Strive to get better W$F, W$SD and WTSD stats. I would invest in my meta-game by playing with villain's perception--manipulating the HUD stats they see of me, and my showdown hands. Notice that a lot of players these days play with tracking software. Use that to your advantage.

But then again, Courtney plays in tournaments. My 'magic' only work in cash games. In fact, I don't know how to finish in the money in that kind of environment. Take everything that I wrote here with a pinch of salt--it was written from a cash player's perspective.

It was a tough weekend--donkeys left and right got me on the edge. At some point, I decided to stop checking HM thinking I was down. I need to tweak my HUD. I am using the stats in there to play in spots that I am not supposed to.

I chose not to play last night and saw a cable movie with my daughter--'the social network.' The story was great and inspiring. It reminded me about the issues that I am going through right now. That it's not where you are, but the process and the experience that I am going through.

I am not trying to sound wise or teach anything. I woke up and had this cloud over my head that I can't seem to shake out of. I guess I am trying too hard.

Later today, a pinoy is coming over to have his pc checked out. He said he was coming over after lunch. It's a 4yo dual core dell pc. He said it's got a lot of issues. Typical for a windows vista. I am thinking I'd reformat his hard drive, change the OS to win7 (I love it--almost as good as ubuntu). Then let him test drive it for some time. If the problem is still there, then he needs to upgrade his hardware.

Morning session is in the bag. Time for me to take a break. Time to do some cleaning around the house.

Semen Proven to Increase Life Expectancy

WASHINGTON DC - USA - Women who make regular contact with semen live longer and age less than women who do not, scientists have discovered.

The finding that women who swallow semen and do not use condoms during vaginal sex, live longer and have reduced signs of ageing, has led one researcher to conclude that semen is a miracle potion that should be treasured by every woman.

Male sperm contains vital chemicals that slow down the ageing process and increases life expectancy by up to 35%.

Study author Clifford J. Ponsonby, Ph.D, a psychologist at the State University of Washington in Saint Louis, also found that women who routinely had intercourse without condoms or had facials had better skin quality and wrinkled less plus also had the ability to ingest fatty foods without putting on weight.

Ponsonby's survey of 753 college women and eastern European prostitute's over a 45 year period, also found that those who ingested semen regularly either orally or through vaginal intercourse had a better over all quality of life and would be wealthier in jobs/life.

"These women have a remarkable ability to achieve serious longevity without showing any signs of ageing, this is the key to life," says Ponsonby.

Semen contains powerful hormones including testosterone, oestrogen, prolactin, luteinizing hormone and prostaglandins.

Once these chemicals are absorbed through the vaginal walls they inhibit weight gain and slow down the ageing process.

Women who ingested semen orally were also found to increase their ability to succeed in jobs and wealth as well as brain power and have beautiful ageless glowing skin.

Ponsonby controlled for variables including method of semen extraction, frequency of sexual intercourse, as well as the women's perception of their relationship.
The longer that women went without ingesting semen the more accelerated the ageing process was found to be. Furthermore, there was an immense risk of obesity and heart disease by abstaining from semen as well as increased depression.

Ponsonby's study, which he deems "the first serious attempt to investigate the effect of semen chemistry on women," has underlined his fascinating findings in the research treatise Why Women Need More Semen .

Ponsonby says he has seriously enjoyed working with all his female subjects in the study and would like to replicate the study but this time with 5000 women.

"If you are a woman and wish to increase your life expectancy and overall health plus reduce any signs of ageing you must utilize the magical properties of semen," the groundbreaking study concludes.

Top pair on flop vs MP reraise

Folding is good. Villain has position. I would have called his initial bet, keeping the pot small and see what the flop brings. But if villain made a set on the flop, it's not going to get better for me. I'd rather wait for a better spot and better reads on villan.

If you were to look at the bb/100 stats of long term winners of this game, it's around +4bb/100. Playing in tough spots like this one will not get my bb/100 stat anywhere near the winner's circle. Going to showdown with tptk and an aggressive villain is not going to give me a good return for my investment.

friday, ptr

Now and then, I find myself contemplating if I should go ahead and learn c++. Python in itself, has a lot of libraries/modules that are in my to-do list. Adding another language might complicate things too much for me at this time. I'll keep that in my bucket list for now.

It has been a sideways week for me. I make a little, give back a little. No homeruns, yet. This is better than getting licked by variance. Two sessions finished in the morning. Two more sessions to go for the rest of the day. I am going to take a break now and do the dishes.

One of my kids chose not to go to school today (I have 4). He has this mission to finish all the game levels in his batman wii game. When he gets tired going after that quest, he will either watch tv, or play free online games on the other computer. Like father, like son.

I have accumulated enough fpp's to get a jumper off the vip store. The only problem now is, there are no more stock available except the smaller ones. I'm not interested in their bull caps as they are usually not the perfect fit. The jumpers come in handy. It gets cold here in auckland and a jumper is part of my daily wardrobe.

I went ahead and checked out my profile on I do this now and then to see how my investment in my meta-game is doing. This here is interesting--

(I'll make an analysis about my report card in a future blog.)

This tells me that pokerstars' algorithm to deter datamining works--at least for cash games. What begs to be answered is this--where can you find reliable info/stats about cash game players on pokerstars then?

tptk; villain goes all-in

Easy fold. Unless I have a good read on villain, it makes no sense getting my stack in the middle with TPTK.

Good read, meaning...?
- villain has been splashing chips around all day
- poor showdown hands

Even if villain was a loose cannon, I'd be wary going all in with tptk. UNLESS--villain has less than 100bb stack and everyone else folded, then I'd shove/call all-in. The regular players are taking notes what I showdown with. This action I consider as an investment in my meta-game.

Secret to Happiness?

Lesson #1 – Do something you are passionate about

Really. This is so important. My company, Ethical Ocean, is an online social marketplace which brings together the ideas, people and companies needed to drive a new era in ethical consumerism. Think of us as the “Ethical” I have been obsessed with sustainability for most of my conscious life. And guess what? My team of seven is equally as crazy about positive social change as I am. If you’re going to succeed with your new venture, you will need to live, eat and breathe it for the next five years. If it is something you are not genuinely passionate about, you will puke and you will fail.

Lesson #2 – Recruit your friends and colleagues

My company started with two founders. Then we become three. Then five. Now seven. And guess what? None of us are being paid. We each put in between 15 and 50 hrs each week. Getting people behind your idea is important. As a CEO, you need to be a resource magnet. You need to be able to attract talent, money and ideas and the best place to start is your friends. If you cannot convince them to contribute your idea, you either do not have a very good idea, or you do not have enough friends. From your friends, pick the ones who are hard working, skilled, ambitious and with whom you love to spend time.

Lesson #3 – Get up Sunday Morning

If your idea is not exciting enough to get you out of bed on Sunday morning, you did not pay attention to lesson #1. If you’re up Sunday morning, with nobody working with you, you’ve botched lesson #2. The Ethical Ocean team meets every Sunday from 10AM to 7PM in random coffee shops to crank on our project. It is amazing how much you can get done on Sunday before the rest of the world has recovered from their Saturday night hangovers.

Lesson #4 – Put your Money where your mouth is

When we started Ethical Ocean, I had $40k in student debt. Yet, somehow I convinced my bank to extend my line of credit and I put $20k into the business. Better yet, my equally as impoverished team invested another $40k from their savings, credit cards, and day job salaries. Before this, we worked for a long time building the company without any money – these days were lax. The day we decided to write cheques was the day that things really started moving. Not to mention that investors will not even look at you if you do not have “skin in the game”.

Lesson #5 – F the Rules

Ethical Ocean is doing it. We have hired our first full-time employee, we have recruited 160 great ethical vendors selling 1,700 products. We’ve recruited the CFO of Google to join our advisory board. Finally, revenue is starting to trickle in! Last week we received a term sheet for a 200k investment.

All this said, you would not believe how many people discouraged us from starting this company. “It’ll never work” or “you’re not going to quit your day job are you?” We are an unconventional company. We have 7 founders. We are all working part-time. We are totally democratic in our decision-making. We had a team sleep-over before our beta launch day (ghost stories included). If you’re going to succeed as CEO, you need to sponge up other people’s advice as much as you can, but you must NEVER get stuck in convention. Stay committed to your idea; be creative and resourceful. Do whatever strange things you need to do to make it work – even if it is against the norm.

I found myself on tilt last friday and made people happy on the tables again. Saturday, I had issues with hm2. My error there was that I installed hm2 over hm. When I got an error running hm2, I had to uninstall hm2, reinstall hm and start over from square one reimporting hh and setting up configurations. That took all morning yesterday.

From the afternoon session yesterday to this morning's first session, I had a good run catching my nuts on the turn, and fish calling all-in.

One thing I noticed was that there was a lot of hoping and praying on the tables where fish will call with their stack with nothing better than dominated pocket pairs. This is common with players where I have less than 500 hand history on them.

hm2 test drive

I got my activation code to test drive holdem manager 2.

After a successful install, it went ahead into the wizard asking permission to import hand history from hm1. The program crashed. Reopening hm2, I get a dialogue box saying the program crashed and asks if I want to send crash report or not.

I went through this two more times with the same results. I uninstalled hm2, reinstalled hm1 so I can play poker. ITM, I sent an email to support (better than posting the issue with the hm forum) and see what they will recommend.

I am checking out AutoIT, ahk's 'beautiful sister', as one person mentioned in one of the threads that I follow. Its window spy is a head above what I am using with ahk (I have three), but in terms of ease of use and community support, I am sticking with autohotkey for now.

At the moment, the script that I wrote to help me play multiple tables is working well. I tried writing a similar script using autoIT and it did not work out as there are things I still have to learn. Most of the posts I've read doesn't really mention an big advantage with using autoIt over ahk. They are quite similar in most way. The most striking difference between the two is the syntax. I find it easier to write ahk code than autoit.

weekend variance

...this feels like birthday presents were taken away immediately the following day. It's like april fools day and everyone is doing a prank on you.

So what was the lesson learned here?
- avoid playing on weekends?
- if it's obvious that it's not my day (and fish will get their nuts on the river), play tight.
- best to fold, or raise. Seldom call.

The kids are back in school. It's just me and the cat, smokey at home. Days like these, he'd rather hang with me and sleep in the bed while I play poker.

I made a few more tweaks in my game, cutting back on playing from EP. It's a bit confusing at times, trying to change the habit. It's like I am juggling a lot of things in my head. My PnL showed a negative at the end of last month. I lost a few big hands on that one last day. I think I've got them back by now.

I am taking shots at 5NL. Instead of exclusively playing 5NL, I decided to mix up 2NL and 5NL in my table selection. This way, I get to play at the quality tables based on table selection rules.

I just finished my first session for the day. I am taking a break now--go was the dishes and do other household chores.

2011 chart

I finally got off my b*tt and updated holemmanager. The chart above shows all hands for 2011.

Thursday, July 28, 2011

Tableninja is not working as it should be for the last few days since the pokerstars update. I have been using ahk scripts as a workaround that work, but there are other functions that I have yet to write.

One function that I am thinkng is the 'adjust to same session minimum'. I can write a script that will close that table using ahk after posting this. The thing about these ahk scripts is that I still have to figure out how to fit all those hotkeys into my gamepad. Maybe I can use a modifier or two--ctrl and alt, for use with every hotkey.

Hmmm. I can do that too. I have just finished a session and am about to take a break. I can write scripts for an hour, then take that break.

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

Too lazy to update my poker tracker--my pc is still in testing stage. I will just post charts from the day I started playing again a few days back when I got her to work again.

Something is wrong with tableninja that I am learning how to use autohotkey to supplement my multi-tabling needs. So far, I was able to do two broken tableninja hotkeys. I am thinking of mapping my gamepad to do what tableninja does. I am encountering issues with JoyX and JoyY. I think it is possible to make this work. I might have that script up and running in a week or so.
